Rustem Khamitov headed a column of bike ride participants
Today, on May 22 in Ufa, the Head of Bashkortostan Rustem Khamitov took part in an open city festival of cycling sports "Day of 1000 Cyclists". The festival was dedicated to the International Cyclist Day. The Head of the Republic rode a bicycle from Lenin Square to the Congress Hall together with the participants of the ride.
The distance of the bicycle race was 10 km, the time to cover the distance — about an hour. The sports festival, which is held in Ufa for the sixth time, was attended by 11,500 Ufa citizens. At the festival Rustem Khamitov discussed with cycling activists issues of urban cycling infrastructure. The Head of the Republic called on everybody to actively participate in sports.
The "Day of 1000 Cyclists" bike sports festival was first held in Ufa in May 2011 and was timed to the 1000 days before the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014. 1000 Ufa residents took part in the festival. In 2012, the number of participants increased to 2 thousand, in 2013 — to 3.5 thousand, in 2014 — to 5.5 thousand, in 2015 — up to 8000.
The festival is the biggest cycling event in Russia and is widely known outside the country. It is attended by tourists and organized delegations from different cities of Russia. The main purpose of the festival is promotion of cycling in Bashkortostan for involving the maximum number of people to a healthy lifestyle.
